Friends Academy

Friends Academy was founded in 1876 by Gideon Frost, a Quaker farmer who wanted a school for Friends children and families of similar conviction. Today it enrolls between 500 and 700 students, ages three through grade twelve, on a day-school campus in Locust Valley, NY, on Long Island's North Shore.

Quaker practice shapes the workweek in concrete ways. Faculty and students gather for silent Meeting for Worship. Stated values — integrity, simplicity, patience, and peaceful resolution of conflict — shape how classrooms run and how the adults make decisions together. Faculty meetings lean toward consensus rather than top-down votes, so new teachers should expect to speak up and be heard.

Because preschool through grade twelve sits on one campus, teachers build long arcs with families and trade notes across divisions more easily than at a siloed school. Language faculty can develop multi-year pathways in Mandarin, French, Spanish, or Latin.

The finances are steady. Friends Academy reported about $35.6 million in revenue and $98.7 million in net assets in 2024, with fundraising up nearly 19 percent year over year.
